Gary Taubes. The Case Against Sugar. Knopf, 2016. 385 p. $27.

Author
Journalist with a handful of degrees from Ivy League schools that specializes in science.

Benefit
This book is part of a growing movement in medicine that gets to the root of the destructive nature of the conventional American diet. Processed foods aren't considered "food" by many writers, and the basic building blocks of these foods are salt, sugar, flour, fats, carbohydrates, and wheat.  All of these basic ingredients are staples in American kitchens - and all of these staples, at least as they are consumed in America - are very destructive.

This is a journalist's point of view.  There are also best-selling books on the topic written by medical doctors and surgeons.
